Medication Take Back Box at NVRH

Thursday, May 17, 2018

In May, NVRH joined many other Vermont hospitals and other sites around the state in providing onsite prescription and other medication disposal.

By ensuring the safe disposal of medications, we can help make sure drugs do not get into the wrong hands, or pollute our waterways and wildlife.  “Providing easy access to drug disposal options has become both a State of Vermont and national priority,” said Laural Ruggles, NVRH Director of Community Health Improvement.  “At NVRH we felt it was important to be part of the solution to the health and environmental problems caused by improper disposal of medications.”

The initiative to place drug disposal boxes in hospitals, pharmacies, and law enforcement locations addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Left over medicines in home medicine cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse. According to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs.  Research shows that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet.

Although we do not know the full impact that low levels of medicines in the environment have on human health, we do know that taking your medicines to a take-back location can reduce the amount of medicines getting into our waterways and our drinking water.  Do not flush your medications or throw them in the trash.  Flushing drugs down the toilet sends them directly into our water supply, potentially harming people and the environment. Medicines thrown in the garbage can be found and consumed by children or pets.

The NVRH Medication Drop Box is located in the hall near the Emergency Department and the Caledonia Sheriff’s office.  It is open to the public 24/7.  The NVRH Medication Drop Box meets all DEA and EPA approved disposal protocols.

Questions about the NVRH Medication Disposal Drop Box can be directed to Mike Auger, Director of Pharmacy or Laural Ruggles, Director Community Health Improvement.
